301 Redirect

Before talking about 301 redirects, we should actually know exactly what a redirect is. In short, referral means automatically transferring visitors from one web page to another web page.

A 301 redirect provides a "permanent" redirect from one page to another. For this reason, when we use this kind of 301 redirect, we mention that the redirection to search engines from one URL to another URL is absolute.

The 301 section means the HTTP status code of the redirected page.

A 301 redirect is a status code that a server sends to your browser. Some of you have probably heard of, namely; Status codes such as 404 (Not Found) and 500 (Server Error). With 301 redirects happening quickly, in most of them you are not aware of it and you will find yourself on the content page you are looking for.

Cases Using the 301 Redirect

  • Redirecting your deleted pages to a different page,
  • Make a domain change,
  • Changing the URL structure,
  • In case of need in site migration,
  • Redirecting your pages falling to 404 to a relevant page,
  • When old content is up to date in a new URL,
  • When you combine similar pages on a single page,
  • When you switch to HTTPS / SSL,
  • To use "www" or not.

The Importance of a 301 Redirect for SEO

Search engines try to provide the best experience for their users and visitors, so they don't want to display bad sources, broken links, spam pages, weak content in their search results. A missing resource is surely a bad experience for users and visitors. As we can understand from these working systems, they mostly do not index 404 pages. Many SEO experts already turn 404 pages off manually so they don't get indexed.

A search engine spider scans your page, adds and indexes it to the relevant directories after scanning it, but this situation does not continue forever, it will want to crawl this page again in certain periods. This is where the situation comes to a critical point. A results page on which you have positioned well will not be able to visit the bot again later and will naturally lower your position if it is in the situation of making a 404 error. These sudden ranking losses are made for website renewals for this reason.

In fact, if this situation is found on other pages and is repeated frequently, it is highly likely that your site will be completely insecure. Because you will have a website labeled as wasted browsing budget in vain. This is the most sensitive point. To examine more in detail, Google or a different search engine does not give your site a different privilege than other sites, the scanning budget is very valuable and important because time is very valuable and important. A bot that keeps coming back to your website will stop coming after a while. Worse is the situation with the risk of spam.

When users and visitors click on the URL indexed, 404 will leave your website when directed to a falling page. This simply means loss of visitors.

When you look at the job from a different dimension and the dimension that is overlooked is your in-site links. While the link is working correctly, you may have given a link from different internet pages, if it changes, linking to an insecure link will already affect your pages. Because the link from that page will again affect the experience of that page. To put it briefly, this situation is bad no matter which way you look at it.
